A Force for Nature

Stop A New Road Through Utah's Red Cliffs National Conservation Area

Washington County, Utah, officials want to put a four-lane road through the heart of a Mojave Desert tortoise preserve. The Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service think this is a bad idea. U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) has introduced a bill that would take the decision out of the hands of the agencies. It would force them to approve the new road. The road would kill desert tortoises, a species whose population has steadily declined since being listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
