Power Past Coal in the Olympic City of Colorado Springs

The Martin Drake coal-fired power plant in Colorado Springs, Colorado is an environmental and public health disaster. Right now, we have an opportunity to put this 50 year-old, dirty power plant on the path to retirement and open the door for cleaner, more affordable energy.

Colorado Springs is the Olympic City. Speak out today and tell them to go for the gold, not settle for coal. Now is our chance.

I am writing to express my concerns over the Martin Drake Coal-fired Power Plant and the State of Colorado's proposal to renew the facility's air pollution operating permit, 95OPEP107.

I urge the Air Pollution Control Division to deny renewing the operating permit because the Martin Drake power plant cannot operate in compliance with applicable air quality laws and regulations. Not only are emissions from the power plant causing and contributing to violations of air quality standards meant to protect public health, but the Colorado Springs Utilities have shown that they cannot operate in complete compliance at all times.

While the Martin Drake power plant adversely impacts Colorado Springs' air quality, emissions from the facility are known to impact Colorado's high country and air quality in the western United States. I am deeply concerned over the toll that Martin Drake is taking on the air we breathe.

There are cleaner and more affordable means to generate electricity. With the price of coal climbing and the risks and liabilities around Martin Drake mounting, it is not in the public interest to allow the power plant to continue operating.

Please reject renewing the air pollution operating permit for the Martin Drake coal-fired power plant.  Thank you.
