It's time to truly honor Chaco

President Biden and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland have launched the Honoring Chaco Initiative, a bold plan to ultimately permanently protect the Greater Chaco region from fracking.

As a first step, the administration wants to make oil and gas within 10 miles of Chaco Culture National Historical Park off limits for drilling. It’s a good first step, but we need to ensure Secretary Haaland keeps up the momentum to do much, much more to defend this sacred landscape and its cultural integrity.

I submit the following comments in response to the U.S. Department of the Interior's proposed mineral withdrawal in the Greater Chaco region of northwest New Mexico (No. DOI-BLM-NM-F010-2022-0011-OTHER_NEPA).

First off, I support the Biden administration's Honoring Chaco Initiative, a bold plan to ultimately provide permanent landscape-level protection for the Greater Chaco region.

Second, I support the administration's first step forward to protect Greater Chaco by withdrawing from development all minerals located within 10 miles of Chaco Culture National Historical Park.

Third, concurrent with withdrawing minerals, the administration must launch a process to ensure all the Greater Chaco landscape receives the protection it deserves.

For too long, the Greater Chaco region has been ravaged by the oil and gas industry, putting Tribal communities at risk, undermining the cultural integrity of the landscape, and jeopardizing clean air and water. It must stop.

The Honoring Chaco Initiative promises to put Greater Chaco first and protect this irreplaceable, sacred landscape. I expect the Interior Department to fully follow through with its promises to safeguard and honor Greater Chaco.

As the Honoring Chaco Initiative moves forward, I demand the Interior Department pause all pending oil and gas development proposals, including drilling permits, road construction, and pipeline building. Greater Chaco cannot be honored while it is being despoiled.
