Urge President Biden to keep dirty fossil fuels in the ground

To immediately make progress on climate action, President Joe Biden had pledged to ban new oil and gas leasing on America’s federal public lands and waters. Unfortunately, President Biden has broken that promise.

Nearly a quarter of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions come from public lands due to coal mining and oil and gas drilling. We can’t keep leasing public lands to the fossil fuel industry and have any chance of reducing emissions or seriously confronting the climate crisis.

I fully supported your pledge to ban new oil and gas leasing on America's federal public lands and waters, but am extremely disappointed in your recent announcement about plans to auction off more than 700,000 acres of public lands for more oil and gas drilling.

With the climate crisis worsening by the day, it's time for the federal government to get out of the dirty fossil fuel business and start putting public lands to work for the climate. I urge you to keep your promise, Mr. President.

Over the previous four years, the Trump administration rolled back a coal leasing moratorium on federal public lands and offered over seven million acres of public lands in just the lower 48 states for oil and gas leases.

I'm counting on the Biden administration to take immediate and bold steps to put America on track. For the climate, clean air and water, and a clean energy future that works for both people and the planet, the federal government needs to get out of the fossil fuel business.

Please keep your promise to ban new oil and gas leasing on America's federal public lands and waters and also ban coal leasing on federal public lands.
