Montana is trying to decimate wolf populations, wolves urgently need your voice Four draconian wolf killing bills are incredibly close to becoming law in Montana. The bills would allow trappers to snare wolves, extend the wolf trapping season, place a bounty on wolves, and allow every individual with a wolf hunting or trapping license to kill an unlimited number of wolves, allow the use of bait while hunting or trapping wolves, permit the hunting of wolves at night on private land with the use of artificial lights or night vision scopes. Whether you’re a Montana resident or a Montana visitor who values wolves in the wild, please sign this petition urging Montana Governor Greg Gianforte—who violated state hunting regulations when he trapped and shot a collared wolf near Yellowstone National Park in February—to veto these backward, disgraceful, and outrageous bills. Message * Subject: Dear Gov. Gianforte, * Personalize your message We, the undersigned, call on you to veto the following bills currently in the Montana State Legislature that completely undermine science-based wildlife management and instead amount to a war on wolves in Montana. 1) HB 224 would allow trappers to snare wolves in Montana. Snares are lethal and awful devices that cause tremendous suffering and indiscriminately kill and maim wildlife and pets across Montana. Snaring of any wildlife is utterly unacceptable and expanding this brutal killing method to iconic wolves is especially egregious. 2) HB 225 would extend the wolf trapping season by a month, allowing wolves to be trapped from the end of November until mid-March in Montana. There is no reason that wolf trapping should be allowed at all. Wolves are important to ecosystem balance, biodiversity, and Montana's robust tourism economy. Extending the trapping season just means more dead wolves and more blood on Montana's hands. 3) SB 267 would effectively place a bounty on wolves, allowing private reimbursement for costs incurred for hunting or trapping wolves. This bill would negatively affect Montana's perception outside the state in terms of tourism and essentially monetizes the death of wolves for the benefit of a handful of people. 4) SB 314 would allow every individual with a wolf hunting or trapping license to kill an unlimited number of wolves, allow the use of bait while hunting or trapping wolves, permit the hunting of wolves at night on private land with the use of artificial lights or night vision scopes. If these backward, disgraceful, and outrageous bills come to your desk, as Montana residents and Montana visitors who value wolves and support science-based management of wildlife and public lands, we call on you to veto HB 224, HB 225, SB 267, and SB 314.
