Tell Congress to protect public lands The government agencies that manage federal public lands and safeguard our environment have been busy rolling back public land protections across the American West. But Congress has ultimate authority over public lands, not the agencies. Please tell your representative and senators in Washington, D.C. to reverse agency rollbacks and protect public lands for all. Your letter will make a bigger impact if you speak in your own words and tell your members of Congress why public lands are important to you. Message * Subject: Dear Decision Maker, * Personalize your message As someone who values federal public lands, I'm very concerned that over the past four years land management agencies have dismantled the laws and policies that protect the wild places I love, opening them up to oil and gas development, mining, logging, road building, motorized use, and grazing. Here are just a few examples: - Protections for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments were dismantled and tribal management was eliminated; - Scientific analysis and meaningful public engagement for logging, road building, livestock grazing, mining, and oil and gas development on public lands has been restricted, and even wholly excluded; - Bedrock environmental laws and policies, such as the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, and Clean Water Act have been eviscerated; - Protections for sage grouse habitat have been scrubbed from federal management plans for millions of acres of public lands across the West; and - A plan to open up nine million acres of roadless wildlands on the Tongass National Forest--one of the last remaining intact temperate rainforests in the world--to logging and roadbuilding has just been finalized. These actions come at the expense of public health and safety, fish and wildlife habitat, and the public lands I love. Like the majority of Americans, I want more wildlife protections on public lands and cleaner air and water. As your constituent, I'm calling on you to take a more active role in protecting federal public lands, endangered species, and clean air and water.
