No More Fracking Public Lands In March 2019, WildEarth Guardians won a landmark lawsuit against the U.S. Interior Department and Bureau of Land Management over their failure to account for the climate impacts of selling public lands for fracking. The ruling paves the way for a first-ever accounting of the climate consequences of oil and gas development on public lands. That’s good news, but sadly, the agencies are still selling millions of acres of our public lands for fracking. The reality is we need more than accounting to save our planet. Join us in calling for a moratorium on leasing American public lands for fracking. Stand with us and demand the Interior Department and Bureau of Land Management keep our fossil fuels in the ground! Message * Subject: Dear Decision Makers, * Personalize your message With our climate crisis worsening by the day, it's time for the Interior Department and Bureau of Land Management to do their part to reduce greenhouse gases. As a first step, I call on the agencies to impose a moratorium on leasing American public lands for oil and gas development. The warnings are clearer than ever. We have to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions if we have any chance of avoiding the most catastrophic impacts of climate change. There is no denying that to reduce carbon pollution, we have to start keeping our fossil fuels in the ground. Oil and gas produced from public lands is responsible for 10% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Worse, leasing public lands for oil and gas development is fouling our air, despoiling sacred landscapes, and pushing wildlife to the brink. With its vast tracts of public lands, the American West is especially suffering the consequences of out of control fossil fuel production. We can't keep selling public lands to the oil and gas industry and have any chance of reducing emissions. We urgently need a moratorium on leasing. And we need the Interior Department and Bureau of Land Management to lead the United States toward a fossil fuel-free future. These are our public lands and this is our oil and gas. I demand you start keeping it in the ground and stop leasing lands for fracking.
