Stand With us to Defend Clean Air Along Colorado's Front Range This year, WildEarth Guardians launched its Colorado Front Range Oil and Gas Clean Air Enforcement Initiative. Over the past several months, we’ve sued oil and gas companies, challenged illegal permits, and pushed back against federal fracking approvals. As media reports have highlighted, oil and gas companies are getting a free pass to pollute along Colorado’s Front Range. We aim to change that, but we need your help. Under new legislation, Colorado has to update rules to ensure public health and our environment come first. Stand with us in calling on Governor Jared Polis to take swift and aggressive action to clean up our air and hold the fracking industry accountable to our health. Message * Subject: Dear [Decision Maker], * Personalize your message I urge you to ensure the oil and gas industry is doing everything possible to put public health and our environment first in Colorado. Along the Colorado Front Range, our clean air is suffering. Unchecked fracking has pushed smog levels to dangerous highs, putting the health of the region's communities at risk. We need action. While our air quality is worsening, new legislation (Senate Bill 181) passed this year makes clear we have to do better. Our health and environment have to come before the demands of the fracking industry. I urge you to take the following steps to defend our clean air and put public health first: 1. Pause the permits: Senate Bill 181 requires the Air Quality Control Commission to adopt new rules to reduce oil and gas industry emissions. Until those rules are adopted, I urge you to pause the issuance of new air pollution permits so that public health and our environment is not harmed in the interim. 2. No more loopholes: Put an end to industry's illegal practice of fracking without required air pollution permits. Companies are abusing a loophole in Colorado's air quality regulations--this has to stop. Close the 90-day loophole and ensure companies obtain legally required permits before fracking. 3. Cut emissions: Ensure industry offsets its air pollution and achieves net emissions decreases. With smog levels soaring, it's clear we need deep cuts in smog forming emissions. We can't frack our way to clean air, we must secure meaningful reductions. 4. Start enforcing: Too often, industry gets a free pass to pollute and violates clean air laws with impunity. Enforcement is too lax and failing to deter violations. It's time to ensure companies takes their duty to comply seriously. Violations must be effectively penalized with the aim of deterring non-compliance. Our clean air is too important to sacrifice for short-sighted and unsustainable fossil fuel development.
